Located at the foot of Montjuïc mountain is the CaixaForum, a cultural, social and educational centre designed in the former Casaramona textile factory by modernist architect Josep Puig i Cadafalch which currently hosts exhibitions and other cultural activities of interest.

Why visit Caixaforum in Barcelona?

The reasons are mainly two: its cultural and educational programme for all audiences and the building in which they are installed. It is a building of more than twelve thousand square meters of modernist style that was built in exposed brick, glass and forging elements and was awarded the Annual Prize for Artistic Buildings in 1913.

The building was owned by the cotton industry Casimir Casaramona, who decided to gather all the production of its three factories into a single building in 1909. The factory opened in 1913 and closed its doors six years later. Since then, the building was used with different uses as a warehouse or headquarters of the cavalry of the National Police. Years later La Caixa bought it and, after declaring it an Asset of Cultural Interest in the 1970s, began the rehabilitation and adaptation works for its cultural and social use. Shortly after it was declared a Historical Monument of National Interest.

The building is a set of single-storey horizontal naves that has several exhibition halls dedicated to artists such as Dalí, Rodin, Freud, Turner, Fragonard or Hogarth. It also has a very wide schedule of activities, including concerts, cinema, lectures, literature and multimedia art, among others.
